Child's Play

“And I broke my leg” he says, feigning an injury he once had
But was too young to remember what it felt like
So he lies, sprawled out in the cool autumn grass
Pretending to feel it
As a fire burns in the background
And the girls dance around him with flashlights
At this very moment, I see he is smiling
And is everything he wants to be
A damp autumn night
Dancing with flashes of light
